Abstract
This talk will address various aspects of the mechanics of disordered cellular systems. In a first part, I will focus on a simple passive material: liquid foam. Its quasistatic rheology will be discussed, based on numerical and experimental results. In particular, the appearance of heterogeneous flow profiles in simple shear geometries as well as the role of long range elastic fluctuations will be described. In a second part, I will present an ongoing work on quantifying embryo morphogenesis. We introduce a kinematic description which captures the range of behaviours observed in reshaping embryos. It provides a comprehensive framework for measuring and exploring the patterns and rates of morphogenesis at an intermediate or mesoscopic scale of local domains of ~20 cells where key morphogenetic behaviours such as convergence and extension become non ambiguously measurable.
