Lord Kelvin initiated the study of knotted vortices with his vortex theory of atoms in the mid-nineteenth century. Today knotted vortex strings are being studied in a range of systems. Examples will be presented from physics, chemistry and biology. A potential application to knot untangling will also be discussed.
