Abstract
I will review the recent progress in realizing the inflationary paradigm in string theory, focusing on D-brane inflation models in which, in contrast to standard single field slow-roll inflation, fluctuations in the inflaton field can propagate at a speed significantly smaller than the speed of light. This yields distinctive observable effects, with strong implications for the amplitude of the gravitational wave background, non-Gaussianity of primordial perturbations, and the shape of the primordial power spectrum of scalar perturbations. I will show how a combination of microphysical and observational constraints (even with current data) strongly limits these models, and hence the underlying string theory framework.
