Abstract
In the last 20 years, the COPPE -UFRJ centrifuge modelling group has pioneered multiple gravity physical modelling in Brazil, comprising drum and beam centrifuges. Recently, simulations covering the lateral, vertical and axial response of risers at the touch down point were undertaken under the auspices of Technip/FMC. In addition to this subject, studies on the behaviour of pipelines buried in compressive soils and in soils subject to mass movements were conducted in collaboration with PETROBRAS .
In 2015, a new research topic on the instability of submarine clay slopes under seismic loading was initiated in cooperation with IFFSTAR and PETROBRAS to understand the effect of topography on seismic response. Additional study covers the physical modelling of a debris flow in a submarine environment using a drum centrifuge for run-out simulations. In parallel, rheological studies were undertaken to help understand the importance of these parameters in the overall phenomena.
