There is indirect evidence that volcanism influences ice-flow in the West Antarctic ice sheet (WAIS) but mapping of volcanoes here is limited to those that protrude through the ice sheet and those inferred by geophysical techniques. This talk will present evidence of a recent subglacial volcanic eruption that caused the deposition of ash and tephra over an area about 1/10th the size of Britain. At present we can only speculate at the impact this eruption may have had on ice flow in this, the most rapidly changing, region of the Antarctic ice sheet.
