Abstract: In the talk, I will explore some of the technical challenges associated with the sequestration of carbon dioxide into deep saline aquifers and oil fields. This includes challenges for modelling the dispersion of the CO2 in subsurface aquifers, and challenges of monitoring the resulting CO2 plumes. The talk will be illustrated with a series of simplified laboratory experiments and models to quantify some of the dominant dynamics.

Biography: Andy Woods is the BP Professor in the BP Institute, University of Cambridge. His research is focussed on the dynamics of fluid flows related to energy and the environment, including multiphase flow through permeable layered rocks, flows in geothermal systems, volcanic flows and air flows through buildings. He has an MA and PhD in applied mathematics from University of Cambridge.
