Abstract

This interactive mathematical session will focus on a range of tricks that appear to be magic; however, we will closely examine them to see what is really happening behind the scenes. Some of the tricks work as a result of clever, but simple, mathematics, whilst others are more a case of probability or psychology. A few of the exercises will be left unsolved by the group so students may think about possible solutions after the lecture. Students are asked to bring a pencil or pen and a basic calculator to the lecture.

About the speaker: Adam Boddison is a freelance mathematics consultant interested in engaging the minds of young people with how maths affects everyday life. In addition to teaching maths at both primary and secondary levels, he is a postgraduate researcher investigating how video conferencing technology can enrich the maths curriculum at Key Stage 2. Adam’s wider interests include strategy games, magic and psychology.
