Stokes-Smoluchowski-Einstein-Langevin Theory for Active Colloidal Suspensions

Abstract
The classical statistical mechanical theory of colloidal suspensions combines the insights of Stokes and Smoluchowksi, on the dissipative forces between particles and fluid, and of Einstein and Langevin, on the corresponding fluctuating forces. We have shown recently how this theory can be generalized to active colloids - particles which produce fluid flow even in the absence of rigid body motion – and be used to rationalize experiments involving collective phenomena, in particular phase separation, symmetry-breaking and long-ranged order. I will describe these results in outline and discuss other applications of the theory.
