Abstract

In this talk, Dr Annamaria Motrescu-Mayes, Cambridge University, discusses how specific visual literacies, from the early 1930s to 2010s, have shaped representations of gender hierarchies, social conflicts and political identities in India. She considers examples of British colonial fake ethnography alongside cases of contemporary re-imagined social roles and identities. The talk draws on examples of amateur footage, mobile phone films and governmental advertising campaigns as well as on rare archival footage selected from the collections held by the Centre of South Asian Studies, Cambridge, the Imperial War Museum, and popular social media sites.
