Abstract
The moduli space of curves (or Riemann surfaces of dimension 1) has been studied by geometers and topologists since Riemann’s papers in the late 19th century. More recently, the subject has had significant interactions with mathematics physics. While much is known about the geometry of the moduli space, many important questions remain open.
I will discuss basic cohomology classes, their associated rings, and the relations they satisfy. The study has origins in ideas of Mumford from the 1980s, conjectures of Faber-Zagier from the 90s, and more recent proposals of Pixton. The role of special hypergeometric series and the connections to Cohomological Field Theories will be highlighted.
There will be a wine reception following the talk in the Central Core.
Series This talk is part of the Mordell Lectures series.
