Porridge, Peas, and Pizzas: An Exploration of Food in Fairy Tales

Abstract
Fairy tales are strewn with grain, and not simply along the path into the deep, dark woods. As the most frequent foodstuffs in Western European literary fairy tales, foods such as bread, porridge, and cake are sometimes imperceptible as foods of the everyday. Yet, these foods are also laden with historical information, and, by viewing them in their own context, our understanding of the tales themselves can be enhanced. Using literary texts, historical cookbooks, and quantitative data analysis, this talk will examine a selection of material food objects as they occur in fairy tales.
Dr Rose Williamson completed her PhD, entitled A Historical and Literary Analysis of Grain Details in Literary Fairy Tales, through the Sussex Centre for Folklore, Fairy Tales, and Fantasy at the University of Chichester. She also recently co-wrote The World Treasury of Fairy Tales & Folklore with Dr Joanna Gilar.
