It's not me, it's the data! A study of the difficulties of analysing EU subsidy data

Abstract
There is a lot of research on how to support data wrangling – the way we transform data in preparation for analysing it – and its associated challenges. But what about difficulties that can’t be solved by wrangling, such as missing data, or a fundamental mismatch between the schema of the data and the questions we want to ask?
In this talk I will present my work as an intern at the Alan Turing Institute. I will briefly describe the autoethnographically-informed study I ran exploring these challenges. I will then discuss the set of problems with the data that we encountered and argue the need to create a vocabulary for talking about these issues.
