Abstract
The Cambridge Migration Society presents the second seminar in our series on Humanitarianism and Development in the Governance of Migration “Crises”.
About the series: This series brings together development practitioners, humanitarian workers, and academics in various fields to explore and critically discuss how policies and practices in the fields of development, humanitarianism, and migration control inform and intersect with each other.
About this seminar: In the last few years, humanitarian NGOs operating from Sicily have increasingly become key actors in operations of search and rescue of migrants in distress in the central Mediterranean. Their efforts have been met with mixed responses from state actors. This seminar seeks to shed light on the ways that humanitarian non-state actors have responded to a perceived migration crisis in a context of repressive control of irregular migration flows.
