Abstract
Efforts to improve care for serious paediatric and neonatal illness in Kenya’s district hospitals have evolved over more than a decade and in parallel with shifting attention from research on ‘what to do’ to research on ‘how to achieve changes at scale’. Complementary streams of work spanning development of evidence-based national guidelines, contextually appropriate training and job aides and measurement and feedback have helped shape changes in professional norms facilitating adoption of better practices at scale. More recently work has evolved to include key attributes of learning health systems and research that may help shape the future organisation of services.
