JSJ decompositions

Abstract
In group theory, JSJ decomposition is a way of cutting a group up into simpler pieces in a canonical way, inspired by the 3-manifold decomposition of the same name. In this seminar I’ll talk a bit about how it’s defined and how it behaves, in particular in the case of a hyperbolic group. In the hyperbolic case, a theorem of Brian Bowditch describes how a particularly useful JSJ decomposition of a group can be read off the structure of local cut points in the boundary of the group. I will describe how this is done.
