Abstract
Cairo-based engineer Joseph Hekekyan and British geologist Leonard Horner produced the first geological chronology of ancient Egypt in 1858, concluding that humans had existed there for over 13,000 years. This talk discusses Hekekyan’s remarkable field records and the publication’s mixed reception to illuminate the roles of local knowledge and Egyptology within contentious mid-Victorian debates about human antiquity and Scriptural authority.
