Abstract

The Hughes Hall Postdoctoral Research Group organizes the seminar Beyond Research.

According to the Royal Society over 95% of STEM PhD holders in the UK will leave academia due to the lack of permanent research positions.

The academic landscape has changed dramatically over the last years. More PhD than ever are awarded and the number of permanent research post has not increased proportionally. Furthermore, the increasing pressure to publish that students and post-docs face mean that they do not have sufficient time or opportunity to explore alternative routes to academia.

In this seminar, we will give students and postdocs a chance to reflect on the impeding questions of What is beyond academia? and how can I bridge the gap between the academic and external worlds?

We will have three speakers that have transited from academia in to non-academic roles to come and talk to us about their experiences, rewards and difficulties during the process. They will tell us their stories in short and accessible formats. At the end of the seminar, we will have a round table where the attendees will be able to pose questions of concern regarding performing this transit.
