Abstract
I will describe the early results of an instrument design study for the European (42m diameter) Extremely Large Telescope. EAGLE is intended to be a Multi-Object Adaptive Optics fed deployable Integral Field Unit spectrograph working in the near infra-red. A consortium currently involving 2 UK and 4 French groups have received a 2 year contract to produce a conceptual design. I will outline the science case, and describe our current ideas about the adaptive optics feed and the instrument.
