Abstract
In this talk, a series of simple experiments and physical models will be presented to help interpret the processes which control explosive volcanic eruptions. The talk will include descriptions of the triggers of eruptions, the controls on how liquid magma transforms into ash and also the dynamics of giant ash plumes which can rise 30-40 km into the atmosphere and massive ash flows which can travel distances up to 90 km.
Series This talk is part of the Cambridge University Physics Society series.
