Abstract
The effect of geometirc imperfections on the seismic performance of thin masonry shells
Summary: The growing interest in tile vaulted structures has led to the need to ensure their safety in seismic regions. However, predicting the behaviour of this type of structures in an earthquake remains still a major challenge for engineers, due to the complexity and uncertainty of the parameters involved in the problem. A good example is the variable nature of geometric imperfections which are likely to arise due to the construction method employed. This study aims to investigate the effect of initial imperfections on the seismic capacity and seismic buckling load of an unreinforced thin masonry shell structure using numerical modelling. The method used for the modelling of imperfections and which is based on real data obtained from on-site measurements, will be presented.
