Abstract
Over 3000 people (and 140 Cambridge students) have taken the Giving What We Can pledge to donate ≥10 % of their income to effective causes for the rest of their working life. We’ll hear from three of them at this event:
Georgia – a consultant from London Ben – an environmental economics PhD student at Cambridge Tim – an engineering PhD student at Imperial College
Georgia, Ben and Tim will briefly talk about why they made this decision and how they find actually acting on it. There’ll be plenty of time for questions and discussion, and because it’s at dinner-time, there’ll be free pizza, snacks, beer and soft drinks.
Many thoughts may cross your mind when you hear about this 10% pledge: - Is that actually going to change anything? - A “pledge” sounds elitist or unnecessary - What is an “effective cause”? - 10% sounds like a lot, I don’t even have a job yet.
We’ll be discussing difficult questions and choices like this in a relaxed environment. We hope you’ll leave feeling inspired that we do have opportunities to change things for the better.
This event is in Jesus College Junior Common Room – it’ll be well sign-posted.
As always, this event is open to all, regardless of affiliation with the University of Cambridge.
Series This talk is part of the EA: Cambridge series.
