Optimisation is a mathematical tool used across many areas of applied mathematics. If you have a problem and want to know the `best’ solution to it then you must perform some optimisation and normally this takes the form of an iterative numerical scheme. Surely the minimal expectation is that this scheme will converge to the `best’ solution? I will be exploring this topic and demonstrating some of the problems which arise when we go from a finite dimensional setting to the infinite one.
