Abstract
In this presentation we examine what it might mean to be creative in the languages classroom. We report on an empirical project with school-age language students in the UK, investigating the effects of text type and teaching approach on learning outcomes and on attitudes. For many years younger learners in the UK have been exposed to mainly transactional language in which the figurative has been stripped away. We were interested in seeing how learners reacted to different types of text, including poetry, and the outcomes when the learners were exposed to different teaching approaches, some of which aimed explicitly to prompt creative responses. We present some of our findings, including those which suggest that the rate of vocabulary development can be improved through creative approaches, while attitudes towards language teaching, whether within a traditional or creative condition, remain mixed.
