Optical control and characterisation of aerosol particles

Abstract
Optical tweezing has become an established technique for the characterisation of individual aerosol droplets. Such single particle measurements are crucial for understanding the fundamental thermodynamic and kinetic properties of aerosol particles in the atmosphere and in industry.
In this presentation I will discuss the development of a new tweezer based instrument that is able to simultaneously trap, manipulate and characterise arrays of aerosol droplets. This tool will enable comparative measurements to be performed on droplets of differing composition, as well as the study of droplet โ droplet interactions and chemistry.
