Abstract
Gravity and Quantum Field Theory are our very successful frameworks that were developed and tested during the 20th century. However, gravity has resisted its marriage with quantum mechanics giving rise to many difficulties, problems
and paradoxes over the last fifty years. String Theory entered the picture as a (quantum) framework, distinct from Quantum Field Theory, with the promise to provide a quantum theory of gravity, which it did, for energies well-below the Planck scale.
String theory, changed in many respects the way we look at gravity and space-time. Its most radical
avatar, the AdS/CFT (or holographic) correspondence, turned the tables completely and gave a revolutionary view of gravity, quantum field theory and the nature of space and time. We are only starting to fathom and decipher this new point of view.
