Control systems for Maglev and active railway suspensions
- đ¤ Speaker: Professor Roger Goodall (Head of Systems Research Division, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Loughborough University)
- đ Date & Time: Friday 06 February 2009, 14:00 - 15:00
- đ Venue: Cambridge University Engineering Department, Lecture Room 3B
Abstract
Electro-magnetic Maglev systems that use controlled magnets are essentially active suspensions, and a number of control system commonalities with active suspension control for improving ride quality on conventional railway vehicles will be presented. However, although ride quality improvement is always useful for railways, there is a stronger rationale for systems that can enhance the fundamental running dynamics, in particular control of the wheels and wheelsets. The opportunities and research challenges will be explored in the seminar, both conceptually and by means of research project examples.
