Abstract
All are welcome to our third meeting of the term! Dr. David Pratt, who specialises in the political thought and court culture of the early middle ages, will be presenting a paper on ‘King Alfred and the Alfredian Renaissance’.
As usual, the paper will be followed by wine and friendly discussion.
A brief abstract: The late ninth century saw a flowering of learning at the court of the West Saxon king, Alfred the Great (871-99), including a corpus of vernacular translations attributed to Alfred’s own authorship. This paper explores King Alfred’s learned kingship in the broader context of his rule and government.
