Abstract
Seminar with Dr Fred Travis, widely published researcher in the effects of meditation on brain development, especially coherence within the association cortex, and its implication for physical and mental well-being. Live EEG reading during the session.
“I am interested in the upper tail of the distribution of human experiences and their associated brain patterns. My research combines interview data,standard psychological tests, and EEG and PET measures.
Our recent work investigates brain patterns and subjective experiences of individuals reporting the experience of enlightenment, and the construction and validation of a brain based scale—the Brain Integration Scale—to monitor growth of higher states of consciousness.
What is unique about Transcendental Meditation when compared with other programmes is restful alertness—wakefulness without content. This is associated with 1) frontal alpha coherence, 2) frontal-posterior alpha coherence in EEG , and 3) frontal and parietal increases in cerebral metabolic rate and decreases in thalamic metabolic rate in neural imaging.”
