Abstract
Long internal gravity waves in density-stratified oceans have been known to change substantially the ocean surface. Observed surface signatures characterized by increased surface wave steepness are attributed to modulated short surface waves interacting with slowly-varying surface currents induced by long internal waves. Using asymptotic models for a two-layer system with a free surface, near-resonant interactions between short surface and long internal waves are studied and the resulting surface wave modulation is discussed in comparison with observations.
