Abstract
Gromov-Witten and Brill-Noether theory produce certain families of algebraic cycles—the “higher ramification” and “Brill-Noether” cycles respectively—which are of central importance in the enumerative geometry of curves. In this talk, I will survey how recent advances in our understanding of compactifications of the universal Jacobian have connected the two families and ultimately lead to their explicit calculation.
