Abstract
The Umayyad Empire (644โ750 CE) was the first Islamic Empire and one of the largest empires of ancient and medieval times, extending over 5,000 miles from the Atlantic Ocean to the deserts of western Central Asia. This talk explores the geopolitical circumstances that brought about the formation of the empire and the turmoil of the seventh and eighth centuries which shaped both early Islamic religious tradition and Arab ethnic identity.
