Abstract

This talk will focus on the signal processing and human-computer challenges involved in the Vital Responder project. This is a CMU -Portugal funded project with the main goal to provide secure, reliable and effective first-response systems in critical emergency scenarios. To achieve this goal an interdisciplinary team with expertise in areas such as wearable technology for vital signs, biomedical signal processing, sensor networks and RF Location/Intelligent buildings was formed. During this talk, other projects in which the MediaLab research group at the University of Porto is involved will be presented: CAGE - Computer Assisted Gastroenterology Examination; DigiScope – DIG Itally enhanced stethosCOPEs for clinical usage; T-Life – Therapeutic Learning of Facial Emotions.

About the speaker: “Miguel Tavares Coimbra is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science of the School of Sciences of University of Porto. He received his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering and Computers in Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, Portugal, and his PhD degree in Electronic Engineering from Queen Mary, University of London in 2004. He worked as a post-doc researcher in medical imaging at IEETA -Universidade de Aveiro in Portugal until September 2006. He has 9 years of experience in Computer Vision, 5 of which in Medical Imaging and Biomedical Signal Processing research. He leads a team of PhD and Msc students, has numerous publications on the field, leads one financed project and has participated as a researcher in 4 financed projects involving clinical partners. He is a co-founder of Instituto de Telecomunicações – Porto, founder of the Interactive Multimedia Group at IT-Porto, an EURASIP local liason and a Technical Advisor of the IEEE EMBS Portugal Chapter.”
