A Philosopher's Perspective on Anthropic Fine-Tuning
- 👤 Speaker: Dr Tim Mawson, Oxford University
- 📅 Date & Time: Tuesday 26 October 2010, 13:00 - 14:00
- 📍 Venue: Garden Room, St Edmund's College
Abstract
It is sometimes said that our universe is ‘fine tuned’ for life such as ours. Dr Mawson will give his perspective on whether or not there is a sense in which we may truly and with justification say such a thing; whether or not we may use fine tuning to judge the probability of other universes being actual (multiverse hypotheses) and to judge the probability of God’s being actual (the ‘God hypothesis’ if you will). He will argue that a ‘Fine-Tuning’ version of the Design Argument does increase the rationality of belief in God on its premises, premises which – whilst controversial – are not implausible.
