The SAURON survey of 72 local early type galaxies (ETGs) revealed an unexpected dichotomy of properties that depend on their specific angular momentum. Intrinsic shape, the nature of decoupled cores, age, mass-to-light ratio and ionised gas properties were all found to be significantly different for the ETGs with low specific angular momentum. I will summarise the SAURON survey and present the first results a complete, volume limited survey of 260 ETGs which give us a representative view of the Universe and lead to a re-evaluation of Hubble’s tuning fork diagram and the physical processes that shape galaxies.
