In the Origin of Species, Darwin has focussed on explaining the animal adaptations to the physical environment. Over the last century, behavioural biologists have documented the extent to which animal societies differ and have demonstrated the impact of the social environment that individuals live in on most evolutionary and ecological processes. The lecture will provide an introduction to the diversity of animal societies, explore their impact on evolution and ecology and assess their relevance to understanding the origins of human society.
