Abstract
Within the privacy space, issues such as location privacy, lawful intercept, and online tracking have been the subject of considerable debate. In Canada, these issues must be considered within the formal framework of privacy legislation, which differs from the EU and American regimes in significant ways. As a “tame technologist” at the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, I’ve been deeply engaged in these subjects at a practical level, providing subject-matter expertise for investigations, legal opinions… and even media interviews. In this talk, I will outline some of the ways in which the spheres of technology, policy, and law intersect, illustrated with recent real-world examples from my experiences in privacy regulation.
