Abstract
The South Pole Telescope has identified a new population of dusty star-forming galaxies lying above redshift 2. These rare, ultra-bright systems are magnified by strong gravitational lensing, which allows us to study the formation of massive galaxies in a detail that would be otherwise impossible. I describe the discovery of this important new population, and discuss the on-going follow-up programme which includes data from ALMA , HST and Herschel.
