Malaria kills nearly one million people each year, mostly children under the age of 5. Amazingly, the disease is caused by a single cell which is closely related to photosynthetic marine algae. The malaria parasite contains a chloroplast – just like plants and algae- yet has lost the ability to carry out photosynthesis. As it is an essential component of the cell we researching methods to disrupt its function, in the hope of developing new anti-malarial drugs.
