Abstract
Plants contain by far more ABC transporters than animals and humans. It is assumed that this is due to the fact, that plants are sessile organisms and have to adapt to the changing environmental conditions without being able to escape from a non-favorable environment. Indeed several ABC transporters have been shown to be involved in cellular detoxification, as already observed in animals and fungi. More surprising was the fact that in plants ABC transporters play a central role in phytohormone transport. The first phytohormone shown to be transported by an ABC protein was auxin. In subsequent studies we could show that members of the ABCG subfamily act also as transporters for abscisic acid, strigolactones and cytokinins. In my talk I will summarize published results and give new insights in the transport of abscisic acid, strigolactone and cytokinins.
