What makes a good voting system? Can we ever hope to achieve a perfect one? I will give a few examples of systems currently in use and how they compare in order to explore these questions further.

I will begin by examining a few criteria for a good voting system, then use these to analyse some existing systems. Lastly we will look at Arrow’s impossibility theorem and show the contradictive nature of voting when trying to aggregate individuals’ preferences into a single, rational and community-wide preference.
