A Pint of Knowledge is a series of informal research seminars in the pub where members of the society of Spanish Researchers in the UK (SRUK) explain their research to a general audience. It takes place every 2 months and is open to the general public.

Recent advances in genomics are transforming the ways we study and treat diseases.

The introduction of sequencing into local diagnostic laboratories and the creation of automated tools to interpret newly sequenced genomes hold great promise in the near future. We can diagnose patients faster, prescribe more effective treatments, and even develop new cures. In order to do so, disease mechanisms must be understood, and this is an area where genomics can help us a lot. From there, strategies to search potential cures for diseases span disciplines such as chemogenomics and drug discovery. In essence, these approaches aim to modulate the biological function of disease targets using small molecules.

We will talk about the applications of sequencing to disease diagnosis, studying disease mechanisms, and searching for new drugs. Recent experimental and computational developments as well as challenges in the application of sequencing technologies in the clinic will be discussed.
