Abstract
In this talk I will discuss what happens when one assumes the existence of a free curve of any genus on a smooth projective variety. These are curves which deform to cover the variety, while keeping a number of points fixed. In characteristic zero one proves that if the genus is at least one, then the number of points fixed doesn’t play a role (in contract to the genus zero case) and that such varieties are rationally connected, although the situation is more complicated in positive characteristic.
