Abstract
Two-dimensional semiconductors such as transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit unusually strong excitonic effects due to the reduced screening of the Coulomb interaction between charge carriers at long range. Photoexcitation experiments reveal a rich structure in the absorption spectra of these materials, including lines ascribed to various complexes of charge carriers and donor/acceptor ions. I will describe diffusion quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the binding energies of such complexes and I will discuss the implications of the results for the optoelectronic properties of molybdenum and tungsten dichalcogenides.
