Abstract
Terahertz-frequency quantum cascade lasers (THz QCLs) are powerful yet compact sources of radiation in the 1-5 THz band of the electromagnetic spectrum, with numerous potential applications in trace gas sensing, astronomy, imaging and materials analysis. The operating principles of THz QCLs will be discussed, and an overview of recently-developed self-mixing interferometry sensing techniques will be presented. Future directions for THz QCL research will be discussed, including the integration of QCLs with other THz system components, and the prospects for developing QCLs using alternative high-temperature and high-frequency materials.
