The discovery with SCUBA at the end of the last century of a population of luminous dusty galaxies early in the history of the Universee led to extravagant claims (including by the author) that these objects are proto-ellipticals. I will present some recent results from the SHADES survey that reveal more details about the place of these objects in galaxy evolution. I will also say a little about the prospects in this field with ALMA and the Herschel Space Observatory.
