Abstract
This paper takes a retrospective look at engaging historical attempts to describe distinctive habits of mind instilled in generations of inhabitants of the traditional American “South”– effectively begun by W.J. Cash in his The Mind of the South (1941). The speaker presents a collated list of differences, observed by regional writers, between Southern and outsider Northern patterns of mind “constructed” by their respective regional cultures. As these intangible habits/patterns are diluted now in a more inter-connected world, what is continuing relevance of these reflections?
