Cancer by the Numbers
- 👤 Speaker: Professor Simon Tavaré
- 📅 Date & Time: Wednesday 27 January 2016, 17:30 - 19:00
- 📍 Venue: Yusuf Hamied Theatre, Christ's College
Abstract
The mathematical sciences have contributed substantially to our understanding of the way cancer evolves. Cancer is thought of as a disease of the genome, so Professor Tavaré’s focus will be on mutations in DNA and what they tell us about tumour evolution. He will discuss “tumour heterogeneity”, the DNA sequence variation observed between tumours and within them, and how we might use this to learn about progression, treatment and relapse. Along the way he will illustrate some of the underlying mathematical and statistical tools that have helped in this endeavor. No prior knowledge of cancer biology is required!
