Abstract
Today, IPv6-enabled constrained devices (such as sensors and actuators) are being connected to the Internet. However, such an achievement has required significant efforts from several IETF working groups for over a decade. In parallel, the range of standardized wireless (and wired) interfaces for low-rate, low-energy operation has not yet ceased to increase. In this talk, I present an overview of the protocol suite developed by the IETF for connecting things to the Internet, together with the radio (and wired) technologies currently supported. I also highlight a set of past, current, and potentially future related research and standardization topics.
Bio: Carles Gomez Montenegro received his PhD in network engineering from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in 2007. He is an associate professor at the same university. His research work has focused on wireless Internet access, wireless multihop networks, sensor networks and the Internet of things. He is coauthor of more than 80 technical contributions, including papers published in journals and conferences, a book on wireless sensor networks, and 8 Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) documents. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments. He is currently a Visiting Scholar at the Computer Laboratory of the University of Cambridge, under the supervision of Prof. Jon Crowcroft.
