Alfvén wave driven heating of the Solar chromosphere
- 👤 Speaker: Tony Arber (Warwick)
- 📅 Date & Time: Monday 13 February 2017, 16:00 - 17:00
- 📍 Venue: MR14, Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Wilberforce Road, Cambridge
Abstract
The solar chromosphere requires a local heat input of around 107 erg/s/cm2. It is also permeated by jets of cool dense meter which rise into the corona – spicules. This talk will explain what the problem is and present a model which aims to answer both of these problems. The model is based a Alfvén wave driving of an expanding flux tube which gives the correct heating rate and rise speed for spicule-like structures. The talk will end with a clear and detailed discussion of the limitations of the model and the prospects for these to be be overcome, giving a definitive answer, in the next few years.
