Abstract
We study the genetic origin of morphological diversity among closely related species. How new gene networks controlling morphological trait formation during development emerge; how changes in gene regulatory interactions produce phenotypic diversity. We are addressing these general questions in the context of wing pigmentation pattern evolution in Drosophila species. Combining genetics, molecular biology and quantitative imaging, and a group of closely related fly species that captures distinct evolutionary patterns, we explore the determinants of wing pigmentation evolution along different phenotypic directions and how they distribute within gene regulatory networks.
